Tagline: "Just because your hair is full doesn't mean it's strong. Be careful. Give it 30 minutes of condition." Hairdresser and salon owner Harold Melvin worked as the hair stylist on a number of films, including "White Man's Burden" (1995), "Claudine" (1974), "Buck and the Preacher" (1972), "Come Back, Charleston Blue" (1972), and "The People Next Door" (1970). Historical info, posted on Yelp in 2013: Established in 1973 Harold Melvin's Beauty Salon opened November 1973, and in November this year it will mark the 40th anniversary of Harold Melvin Hairstylist to the stars. When Mr. Melvin opened, he had a star-studded gala with clients such as Harry Belafonte, Ruby Davis, Ossie Davis, Diahann Carroll who are still his friends. Mr. Melvin takes great pride in maintaining his clients' hair. You will see many women who are seniors with a healthy full head of hair. The staff is very professional and ALL specialize in hair care. Harold Melvin is a legend of his time. He started out doing hair for his sisters when their mom couldn't afford to send them to the beauty salon. After coming out of the service, friends encouraged him to attend the beauty school Madam Purdue on 125 St. Harlem N.Y. under the G.I. bill. While attending school, he worked at CasDulan Beauty Salon owned by Frenchie. Mr. Melvin was a shampoo boy there and Frenchie paid him 50 cents for a shampoo and the customers tipped him .00. Celebrities came while working with Frenchie. Katherine Dunham Dance Company where Julie Belafonte introduced Mr. Melvin to her husband, Harry Belafonte. That led to Mr. Melvin traveling with Harry Belafonte, becoming his barber and groomer and friend for over 40 years. He also became Diahann Carroll's hairdresser traveling with her. Mr. Melvin became the First Black Hairdresser accepted in the union.
