Thriller night

Reading books and watching films are two of my favourite pastimes. If some sweet popcorn and Maltesers are thrown into the mix, I'm one happy bird.

Thrillers with heart
I've just finished reading "Afterwards" by Rosamund Lupton. I also read her debut novel "Sister" and both are difficult-to-put-down reads. Her books are classed within the thriller/crime fiction genre, but they aren't your typical Tess Geritsen or Lee Child (both of whom are brilliant by the way!)

Both books are thrillers in the sense that there is a crime central to the story and a twisting and turning plot, but they have "soul" they are written beautifully and with great poignancy. If you've read and enjoyed "Lovely Bones" you'll like these even better! Just to entice you further, "Sister" has a great twist at the end!

Movies
In terms of films, the best one I've seen recently is "Hannah." It's an interesting plot with great acting from Eric Banna and Cate Blanchet, but the clincher for me is the amazing cinematography, it is breathtakingly beautiful to watch.
Actress, Saoirse Ronan who plays Susie Salmon in the film adaptation of the book "Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold, plays Hannah, and she is brilliant at playing her part. If you like Quentin Tarantino style films such as "Kill Bill" you're going to LOVE this film.

Saying goodbye
I always feel a little sad when I finish a good book, it's like saying goodbye to good friends, leaving the characters behind. So, I like to have a few in waiting. These are the books I have lined up to read next:

The Innocent by Harlan Coben
No Second Chance also by Harlan Coben
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
One Day by David Nicholls (I know I'm late to this party!)

Eclectic
I'm also looking forward to some new movie releases on dvd, namely, Mr Poppers penguins, Captain America and Hangover 2.....yep, my taste in films and books is pretty eclectic!

Have you read any great books recently or seen a good film? What books/films are on your Christmas list? Let me know your recommendations in the comments, please.

  1. I mostly read non-fiction, I'm not sure why but I used to read a lot of fiction when I was younger. I think I should start doing that again, maybe I could put one of these books on my list :)
And I need to put Hanna on my movie list too!

Lovely post! I need to do something like this soon! And I still need to do that ABC idea I got from you. The reason I never get started is that I need to find a good picture for A (I know the subject though).

  2. Ooh I might try those books out, I really liked reading the lovely bones!
I watched Red State the other day and I really liked it, prob not everyones taste (as it can be a little disturbing) but I thought the story & acting was excellent! (scarily believable)! My bf showed me the trailer & I was all "uh no! were not watching that"...well..once it gets started I was glued! Let me know if you watch it! :) x

  3. Books and films are my favourites too....although I prefer minstrels and salted popcorn!

I've read both of Rosamund Lupton's books....really enjoyed them, even though not usually my cup of tea!!

Not seen Hanna, although rate Saoirse Ronan as an actress....she managed to shine through a pretty good cast in both Atonement and The Lovely Bones, and if you can be believeable as being the child version of Vanessa Redgrave, then you must be good!

Not a Harlan Coben fan, however my mum is and has read both of those and quite rated them! I read One Day a good while back, before it started getting loads of hype, and loved it! Its gone on my top ten books of all time, and I'm not easily pleased!!

There are two books I'm dying to read - The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown as they seem really good reads....

Film wise, nothing is floating my boat much atm....like the look of My Week With Marilyn and also sad to admit that I slightly enjoy the Twilight series, so want to see the latest installment, even though I hear its really bad!!

  4. @Niina Hannah is incredibly good! Well worth watching:) I've actually dropped the A-Z feature. Readers didn't seem to like it much, they were the only posts that never got any comments! Maybe you'll have more luck?! :D xx

@glamourrouge Oooh! I've seen the trailer for Red State, it's on my list! Thanks for recommending, hun! :D xx

  11. I quite enjoyed Hannah but I wasn't overly sure on the ending, it just seemed to cut off as though it was the end of a scene and didn't carry on!
